A tragic incident unfolded late Thursday in Bosanska Krupa, Bosnia, where a 14-year-old broke into a police station, fatally stabbing one officer and injuring another, according to local authorities.
The attack occurred in the town located roughly 300 kilometers (186 miles) northwest of Sarajevo, confirmed Ramo Isak, the interior minister for Bosnia’s Bosniak-Croat federation, one of the country’s two main entities.
“One officer is dead and the other is wounded,” Isak reported.
Police spokesperson Adnan Beganovic informed national broadcaster BHRT that the injured officer is in critical condition.
According to AFP, the young assailant, reportedly born in 2009, has been arrested, and prosecutors have begun an investigation into the incident. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Regional police chief Adnan Habibija expressed concern, saying, “This is very sad. What surprised us is that it concerns a minor aged 14 who dared attack officers in a police station. It’s an alarm bell for our society.”
The town’s mayor, Armin Halitovic, described the community of 11,000 residents as peaceful and tolerant, noting the shockwaves the attack has caused.
“We are a peaceful and tolerant town,” he stated.
In response, authorities have increased security measures in the area.
