A yet-to-be-identified Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) from the Lagos State Police Command was tragically killed in the Agege area on Saturday morning, following an altercation with irate commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as Okada riders.
The incident occurred when the deceased, leading a team of officers, responded to a distress call regarding an accident at WEMCO junction along Mobil Road. According to reports, the team arrived to evacuate a truck that had knocked down an Okada rider.
However, the police were met with fierce resistance from a group of riders who demanded that the truck involved in the accident be set ablaze.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident, describing it as a senseless act of violence.
Tragically, the Okada rider lost his life as a result of the accident, which fueled the anger of the motorcyclists against the police officers.
Hundeyin said, “On getting to the scene, the team met a marge number of motorcycle riders who haf gathered around the place. However, the patrol team in the process of evacuating the truck came under attack by the riders who insisted on torching the truck as a result of which one ASP, 46 years old was injured on the head and he died on the spot while the truck driver escaped.
“Five suspects have since been arrested and manhunt for other is on.”
