The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into the lawmaker representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, Alex Ikwechegh, following allegations of assault on Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.
The move to probe Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), was announced during Tuesday’s plenary session after Julius Ihonvbere, the Majority Leader, raised a “point of privilege.”
The incident, which took place on October 27 in Abuja’s Maitama district, was captured in a viral video showing Ikwechegh in a heated exchange with Abuwatseya, whom he allegedly slapped and insulted for asking him to approach the car to receive his package.
The video sparked widespread criticism, prompting the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command to summon Ikwechegh for questioning.
Following the referral, the House of Representatives has directed its Committee on Ethics and Privileges to investigate the matter.
Meanwhile, Ikwechegh has issued a public apology following an altercation with a bolt driver at his Abuja residence in Maitama.
In his statement, Ikwechegh acknowledged his actions were inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards expected of a public official.
He went on to express regret for the distress and embarrassment caused to Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the wider public.
Ikwechegh affirmed his cooperation with the Nigerian Police, supporting their investigation to ensure accountability.
