Manchester United are expected to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Erik Ten Hag’s permanent replacement later today, October 31.
This development follows Manchester United’s successful negotiations with Ruben Amorim’s current club, Sporting Lisbon.
The Athletic reports that the 39-year-old manager will remain with Sporting for their next three fixtures, which notably include an upcoming Champions League match against their rivals Manchester City.
According to sources, Amorim is slated to take the reins at Old Trafford during the November international break. His inaugural match in charge of Manchester United is anticipated to be an away fixture against Ipswich Town on November 24.
Sky Sports has revealed that the Premier League side has compensated Sporting Lisbon with an additional one million euros, surpassing the stipulated exit clause of 10 million euros (approximately $11 million), to facilitate Amorim’s early release from the club.
On Tuesday, Sporting Lisbon officially acknowledged the ongoing discussions and confirmed to the Lisbon Stock Exchange that Manchester United were prepared to meet the contractual release clause for Amorim.
This managerial change comes on the heels of Manchester United’s decision to part ways with Erik Ten Hag after a lacklustre start to the season, culminating in a disappointing 2-1 defeat to West Ham.
This loss left the team languishing in 14th place in the Premier League standings, prompting the club to seek a swift change in leadership.
As the search for a new manager progressed, Ruben Amorim quickly emerged as Manchester United’s top candidate for the role.
In the interim, former United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken over as caretaker manager. Under his guidance, the team achieved a convincing 5-2 victory against Leicester City during the fourth round of the League Cup on Wednesday, providing a glimmer of hope to supporters.
Reflecting on his role, Van Nistelrooy expressed his commitment to the club, stating, “I came here as an assistant to help the club. I’m helping for as long as I’m needed and in the future, in any capacity, I’m here to help the club build towards a successful future.”
