The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has paid tribute to five of its personnel who tragically lost their lives in a recent auto crash en route to the African Military Games 2024 in Abuja.
In memory of the deceased, a minute of silence was observed across all NAF formations during its Fourth Quarter 2024 Route March exercise on Saturday.
The personnel were among 19 travelers who perished in a collision at Hawan Kibo, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
“The accident occurred as our personnel were traveling to Abuja for a sporting event, when their vehicle collided with an oncoming truck,” explained NAF spokesman, Olusola Akinboyewa.
Following the tragedy, the NAF has activated administrative protocols to support the families of the deceased, emphasizing the sacrifices made by their personnel in service to the nation.
Air Commodore Olusola Akinboyewa, Director Public Relations and Information Headquarters, reiterated the Air Force’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families.
“The Nigerian Air Force will forever remember our fallen heroes and stand by the families they left behind,” he stated.
The Route March exercise demonstrated the physical fitness, mental resilience, and unity among the NAF personnel, reflecting the force’s readiness for operational challenges.
Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff, who attended as the guest of honour, underscored the importance of physical and mental preparedness.
He announced plans to enhance NAF’s sporting facilities, including the construction of a new gym at the NAF Special Operations Command and refurbishing existing ones across all units.
Air Marshal Abubakar’s emphasis on “Deliberate Training and Mission-oriented Force Development” aligns with his vision for maintaining operational effectiveness.
He also encouraged regular participation in sports to boost fitness, teamwork, and talent discovery among the youth in NAF bases.
The event concluded on a high note with the NAF male volleyball team being lauded for topping the National Division 1 Volleyball League and securing promotion to the Premier League.
