A student named Ariyo Monday from Obafemi Grammar School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, reportedly died after a teacher allegedly subjected him to 162 frog jumps and flogged him.
According to a video shared by activist JustAdetoun, the incident began when the teacher brought a trash can to the class, instructing students to handle it carefully.
Ariyo joked that the trash can was purchased with student funds, which angered the teacher. Following this, the teacher reportedly consulted the principal, who authorized the punishment.
In her account, JustAdetoun claimed that Ariyo was subjected to 164 strokes of the cane, after which he collapsed.
Naija News observed from the video that Ariyo, who was placed on a drip, in a hospital bed, was groaning and struggling to speak from the hospital bed.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident but clarified that the punishment involved 24 strokes of the cane and 162 frog jumps.
Odutola noted that the student passed away at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, with his body now at Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy.
She said, “The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today [Friday].”
The cause of death remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
