The Owu Kingdom in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where former President Olusegun Obasanjo hails from, is in mourning following the death of the mother of Oba (Professor) Saka Adelola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom.
Alhaja Alirat Ayinke Matemilola (Née Bolaji), aged 81, passed away in the early hours of Sunday. The matriarch of the Matemilola family is remembered as a cornerstone of her community and a beloved figure within her family circle.
According to The Nation, Alhaja Matemilola will be laid to rest at the Abari Cemetery on Lagos Island at 2 pm today, following Islamic rites that reflect her devout faith and community standing.
She leaves a legacy through her seven children, who have each made significant strides in their respective fields. Her survivors include her son Oba Matemilola; Alhaja Fatimah Adéyemí; Musa and Hafeez Matemilola, both engineers; Mrs. Mujidat Arogundade; Dr. Saheed Matemilola; and Mr. Soliu Matemilola, who confirmed the news of her passing, stating, “I lost my mum this morning at around 7:30 am. She was with the Olowu in Abeokuta.”
The loss of Alhaja Matemilola marks a poignant moment for the Owu Kingdom, as it reflects on the life and impact of one of its revered elders.
