A group of sports journalists heading to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to cover an African Nations Cup qualifier match between the Super Eagles and Libya were abducted by gunmen while travelling through Anambra State.

Sources revealed that around 11 journalists were in a bus passing through Iseke, near the Ihiala area of Anambra, when the attack occurred on Wednesday.

A source told Daily Post Thursday morning that nine journalists have been successfully rescued, though one is feared dead and four continue to be held.

Meanwhile, Naija News gathered that the Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident, with spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga stating that police teams were deployed promptly to secure the journalists’ release.

Ikenga explained, “We intercepted the information as was being shared on various social media platforms yesterday, and we went to work immediately.

“As I speak to you, a joint operation is ongoing. We are however not sure if they are in captivity or were able to escape
.”

He also noted that, while details on the rescues remain unclear, efforts are ongoing to safely free the remaining journalists.
