Presidency Counters Bishop Kukah, Says Tinubu Signed Peace Agreement

The presidency on Tuesday, declared that contrary to claims by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah, President Bola Tinubu signed the two peace accords preceding his election in 2023.

The Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made this known in a post via his account on the X platform.

Citing a fack check report by The Cable, Onanuga reiterated that President Bola Tinubu is committed to free and fair elections in Nigeria.

According to him, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who was his running mate in the election, signed the first peace accord on September 29, 2022, and also signed the second peace accord for candidates to accept the outcome of the election on February 23, 2023.

The statement titled, ‘Bishop Kukah is not correct; Tinubu signed peace accords in 2023’ reads: “Contrary to the claims by Bishop Kukah, President Tinubu signed the two peace accords preceding his election in 2023. The first accord, committing the candidates to a free and credible election in the country, was signed on September 29, 2022. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu.

“The second agreement, signed on February 23, 2023, was for the candidates to accept the election outcome.

“Tinubu signed.”

Naija News recalls Kukah, had claimed that President Bola Tinubu never signed a peace accord when he was a presidential candidate.

The clergyman stated this in Benin City during the Edo Election Security Townhall meeting on Sunday.

He warned that the failure of political parties and their candidates to sign the Peace Accord to shun electoral violence sends a wrong signal to Nigerians.

The clergyman said this based on reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) refused to sign the peace pact ahead of the 2024 governorship election in Edo State over some allegations levelled against the police.

Kukah, one of the conveners of the National Peace Committee headed by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, said the group can’t force any candidate to sign the peace pact which has become an electoral ritual in the last decade.
