President Bola Tinubu has appointed Abdulrazak Yusuf Tukur as National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission, representing the North West.

Naija News reports that the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the appointment in a statement on Monday.

Onanuga said Tukur has a Bachelor of Arts from Bayero University, a postgraduate diploma in Economics from Bradford University, England, and a Master of Arts from Leeds University, England.

He began working for INEC in 1999 as assistant chief administrative officer and rose to become the director of Electoral Operations and Logistics.

Tukur’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Senate.

The presidential aide further stated that Tinubu also nominated a lawyer, Saseyi Feyijimi Ibiyemi, to replace Ogun State’s late Resident Electoral Commissioner.

Onanuga also said if the Senate clears Ibiyemi, he will replace another lawyer, ‘Niyi Ijalaye, who died in August while serving as the resident electoral commissioner in Ogun State.

Ibiyemi, 58, who hails from Ilaje in Ondo State, is currently the Administrative Secretary of INEC in Lagos State.

Ondo: We Have Learnt Our Lessons From Edo Election

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, has given assurances that the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State will be free and fair.

He promised that it would also be better organized than previous elections.

The INEC chairman gave the assurances on Monday during his visit to the state headquarters of the commission in Akure, the state capital.

According to him, the electoral umpire has gained valuable lessons from the recent Edo governorship election and other elections in the area of logistics and results management which should make the Ondo polls better.
