President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, did not make any statement regarding the restoration of electoral integrity in Nigeria, contrary to circulating assumptions.
On Sunday, former President Goodluck Jonathan extended his congratulations to Trump on his election victory through a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Jonathan wrote, “Dear President Trump. I extend my warmest felicitations to you on your election as the 47th President of the United States. Your impressive victory is a testament to the American people’s faith in your leadership and vision for the future.
“I am optimistic that your Presidency will not only advance the American dream but also promote the cause for global peace, stability and progress.”
In response, an X account named ‘Donald Trump Campaign Updates’ expressed appreciation for Jonathan’s message and mentioned restoring electoral integrity in Nigeria and Africa.
“Thanks for your goodwill words together we will make America great again and restore electoral integrity in Nigeria and across the African continent,” the post read.
The post, which was made around 11:37am on Sunday, led some social media users to assume that the account belonged to Trump, garnering praise from Nigerians for an apparent pledge to improve the electoral system.
However, checks by TheCable revealed that the account, which has over 1,700 followers and frequently shares pro-Trump content, is not Trump’s official X handle.
As such, the post should not be considered an official statement from the US president-elect.
