The Captain of the Nigerian National Football team, William Troost-Ekong, believes that the Super Eagles of Nigeria merited a draw in their recent qualifying match for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against the Benin Republic.
The match which took place on Thursday night at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, saw the Super Eagles come from a goal down to draw 1-1.
Despite the draw, William Troost-Ekong and his teammates were pleased to extend their unbeaten streak in the qualifiers, although they experienced the setback of conceding a goal for the first time in this campaign.
After the match, the Nigerian centre-back remarked on the importance of the result, emphasizing the team’s happiness with qualifying for the 2025 AFCON.
“It was a fair result,” Troost-Ekong stated. “We’re very happy to have qualified and to maintain our unbeaten record throughout this campaign.”
William Troost-Ekong acknowledged the challenges they faced during the game, particularly noting a moment of bad luck concerning Benin’s goal.
“We were a bit unlucky with their goal because the person who was supposed to be at the far post, Victor Osimhen, was unfortunately at the other end of the pitch when the play unfolded,” he explained.
Note the Super Eagles of Nigeria qualified for the 2025 AFCON with 11 points in five games, four points above second-placed Benin Republic.
Nigeria’s last qualification game will take place at 5 p.m. on Monday, November 18 against Rwanda. The outcome of the game won’t stop the Eagles from qualifying for the tournament because their place is already secured.
