The President of Nigeria Bar Association, Afam Osigwe, has called on judges to work towards restoring confidence of the citizens in the legal system.
Afam Osigwe said the judiciary remains the backbone of a just society. He charged judges to remain steadfast in delivering justice that is accessible swift, and impartial.
He stated this on Monday while addressing a Special Court Session marking the opening of the 2024/2025 Legal Year of the Federal High Court.
He noted that the judiciary had to reflect, renew, and recommit to the ideals of justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
“Our judiciary, the backbone of a just society, must remain steadfast in delivering justice that is accessible, swift, and impartial. While challenges persist, from public perceptions of judicial performance to infrastructural and procedural inefficiencies, we must work together to bridge these gaps and restore trust in our legal system,” he said.
The NBA President emphasized the urgent need for reforms, including modernizing court filings system, addressing delays, enhancing judicial independence, and ensuring the welfare of judges and judicial staff.
He highlighted the importance of combating unethical practices like forum shopping in the legal system and commitment to fostering a justice system that Nigerians can rely on and trust.
“As we begin this new legal year, let us collectively strive to uphold the principles of justice, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. Together, we can build a judiciary that truly serves as the last hope of the common man,” Osigwe stated.
