Both Nigeria and Ghana use the name Detty December. This guide compares what we can check: the season, entry rules, official travel advice and events. We do not pick a winner, because the right choice depends on your passport, dates and priorities.

The name and the season

In Nigeria the season is known for concerts, parties and homecomings, and Lagos is considered its face. Its origin is unclear. Some link it to the 2004 Calabar Carnival, and others credit Mr Eazi with popularising it in 2016. In Ghana the season gained prominence alongside the government's 2019 Year of Return, and Accra is the centre of the celebrations. Ghana's government has said it prefers to promote the season as "December in Ghana".

Entry rules

Nigeria

  • Most visitors need an e-visa, which replaced visa on arrival on 1 May 2025.
  • Passport valid for at least six months.
  • Proof of yellow fever vaccination if you arrive from, or pass through, a country where yellow fever occurs.

Ghana

  • Canada says visas are required for tourist, business and student travel.
  • A news report citing UK guidance in September 2026 said UK passport holders need a visa before boarding.
  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure, per Canada.
  • Canada says proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for travellers from all countries.

In December 2024, Ghana waived the pre-approval requirement for visa on arrival from 1 December 2024 to 15 January 2025. We did not find confirmation of a similar measure for 2026, so check with the Ghana Tourism Authority. For Nigeria, read the Nigeria e-visa guide.

Official travel advice

Nigeria

  • The UK advises against all travel to some areas and against all but essential travel to others. Lagos is not under a UK travel warning.
  • Canada advises a high degree of caution in Lagos because crime is high.

Ghana

  • The UK advises against all but essential travel to parts of Ghana and warns about crime, including robbery, burglary and bag-snatching in Accra. It says burglaries have occurred in some expatriate areas, especially over Christmas.
  • Canada advises a high degree of caution because of crime, and says to avoid non-essential travel within 25 km of the northern border with Burkina Faso.

Neither country is risk free, and each government publishes its own advice for the places you plan to visit. For Nigeria, read is Nigeria safe to visit?.

Events

For Nigeria, the organisers announced Detty December Fest in Lagos for 18 to 30 December 2026, and Rhythm Unplugged is reported for 21 December. See Detty December 2026 events. We have not confirmed Ghana's 2026 events, so we do not list them. Ghana reported more than 125,000 international visitors in December 2024, the highest of any month that year.

Costs

We could not find reliable like-for-like cost data, so we do not compare prices. Both countries report rising prices and heavier traffic during the season.
