About the park
Millennium Park is described as the largest public park in Abuja. It covers 32 hectares in the Maitama district.
A river runs through the main axis of the park and splits it into two sections. Wikipedia says the park is operated by the City of Abuja and Salini Nigeria Ltd.
Two landscapes
One part of the park is a naturalistic area with terraced landscapes of mountain, savanna, deciduous forest, rainforest and brushwood. It also has greenhouses for butterflies and tropical birds.
Near the main entrance is a formal Italian-style garden, with a white travertine path, fountains, polygonal pools and multicoloured shrubs.
A path connects the Cotton Tree, a holy tree, with Aso Rock.
The 2003 opening
Queen Elizabeth II opened the park on 4 December 2003. At the opening, Commonwealth heads of state each planted a Ravenala madagascariensis palm.
