About the museum
The museum is managed by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments. Its collections include objects made from wood, ivory, metal and terracotta.
Reporting from 2019 estimated the collection at 47,000 objects. That figure may be outdated and should not be treated as a current count. Africanews reports that most of the collection is kept in storage.

The renovated gallery
Africanews reported on 4 June 2026 that one of the museum’s three galleries had been remodelled with private funding and opened in April 2026. The gallery houses the permanent exhibition “Echoes of the Past”. Press reports name IHS Nigeria as the sponsor; Brandcom’s headline also names the company.
According to Africanews, objects are arranged in glass cases from oldest to newest, with brief notes. The reported exhibits include two engraved 16th-century elephant tusks and 5th-century Nok terracotta.
Africanews says some wooden and metal items can be touched and photography is unrestricted. These are the policies reported in that account, not independently confirmed current permissions. Confirm them on arrival. Most of the collection is kept in storage, according to the same report.
