AFCON 2025: CAF Cracks Down on Algeria with Heavy Sanctions After Nigeria Defeat
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down severe disciplinary sanctions against Algeria following the chaotic scenes that marred their quarter-final loss to Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a ruling released on Wednesday, CAF’s Disciplinary Board imposed a total fine of $100,000 on the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and suspended two key players. The decision comes nearly two weeks after the heated encounter in Morocco, where the Super Eagles secured a 2-0 victory to advance to the semi-finals.
The sanctions target both player misconduct and crowd trouble. Algeria’s goalkeeper, Luca Zidane, has been handed a two-match ban for violent conduct during the post-match brawl. Defender Rafik Belghali faces a stiffer penalty with a four-match suspension two of which are probationary for "aggressive and intimidating behaviour" towards the match referee, Issa Sy.
The FAF was also fined heavily for the actions of its supporters. The disciplinary board cited the display of banknotes by fans an "offensive gesture" implying bribery as a major violation, attracting a $50,000 fine alone. Additional fines were levied for the use of smoke devices, throwing objects, and security breaches.
A Rivalry Boils Over
The sanctions underscore the intense rivalry between the two North and West African giants. The match, which saw goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, ended in pandemonium as Algerian players and officials confronted the referee, alleging bias.
The Algerian Federation has immediately signaled its intent to appeal the decision, describing the sanctions as "disproportionate." They have also filed a formal complaint against the officiating, claiming valid penalty appeals were ignored.
As Nigeria prepares for the next stage of the tournament, this ruling serves as a stern warning from CAF regarding discipline on and off the pitch.
