Use this checklist to sort out the essentials before you fly to Nigeria. It covers entry rules, power, money, transport and safety, with links to the detailed guides.
Before you book
- Check your passport is valid for at least six months from your planned date of entry
- Check if you need a visa. Most visitors do, and Nigeria now uses an online e-visa
- Apply early and do not buy non-refundable flights before your visa is approved
Full details: Nigeria e-visa guide.
Before you fly
- Complete the online landing card before boarding if you are not a Nigerian citizen
- Bring proof of yellow fever vaccination if you arrive from, or pass through an airport in, a country where yellow fever occurs
- Check the latest government travel advice for your own country
The landing card is on the Nigeria Immigration Service landing and exit card site.
Power
Nigeria uses Type D and Type G plugs, with a 230 V, 50 Hz supply. Bring an adapter if your plugs are different.
Money
- The currency is the naira (NGN)
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash
- Take extra care at banks and ATMs, especially at night
- Watch your card when you pay, because card fraud is common
Getting around
- Arrange your airport pick-up in advance and check the identity of anyone meeting you
- Taxis, including app-based ones, can carry a kidnap risk according to UK advice, so use trusted drivers or ones your hotel arranges
- Avoid travelling after dark outside city centres
- Keep doors locked and windows up in traffic
- Allow extra time, because Lagos traffic can be very slow
Events and tickets
Buy tickets only through authorised platforms linked from the organiser. See Detty December 2026 events.
