Lagos is huge and traffic is slow, so where you stay shapes your trip more than which hotel you pick. This guide compares the main areas for visitors. It does not recommend specific hotels.
Island or mainland
Lagos Island, Victoria Island and Ikoyi are on the islands. Lekki sits on a peninsula east of Victoria Island and connects by a land bridge. Ikeja, Yaba and Surulere are on the mainland. Traffic can be slow everywhere, so allow extra time for every journey.
The main areas
- Victoria Island: business district with luxury apartments, upscale shopping and many expats. Known for heavy congestion.
- Ikoyi: the city's most exclusive residential area, with older mansions, modern high-rises and the largest expat community.
- Lekki: a growing area with gated communities and a lively nightlife scene.
- Lagos Island: the business and administrative centre. The west side is wealthier, and the east is more modest and home to big markets.
- Ikeja: the state capital, with a growing commercial scene and a large shopping mall.
- Yaba: a tech hub with a youthful feel, startups, clubs and Afrobeats nightlife.
- Surulere: livelier and cheaper than the islands, with a strong food and nightlife scene.
