Lagos Shuts Down Ladipo Market Again Over Persistent Environmental Violations
The Lagos State Government has once again sealed the popular Ladipo Spare Parts Market in Mushin. The closure, which took place on the morning of Sunday, February 8, 2026, was ordered due to "repeated environmental infractions" and a blatant disregard for public order.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement action via social media, citing the market's failure to adhere to basic sanitation and traffic laws despite previous warnings.
Key Reasons for the Closure
The state government highlighted several critical violations that led to the decision to shut down the major automobile hub:
- Indiscriminate Refuse Disposal: Persistent dumping of waste on the highway and road medians along the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway.
- Illegal Street Trading: Widespread unauthorized trading activities that have obstructed traffic flow and degraded the surrounding environment.
- Unsafe Conditions: General unhygienic premises that pose significant public health and safety risks.
This is not the first time the market has faced such sanctions. It was previously sealed in September 2023 for similar offenses and was only reopened after meeting strict compliance criteria set by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).
Zero Tolerance for Environmental Abuse
The enforcement is part of the state's broader #ZeroToleranceLagos campaign. Officials have emphasized that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu prioritizes environmental cleanliness and public safety as part of its THEMES Plus agenda.
"The enforcement actions align with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017," Commissioner Wahab stated. "Compliance remains non-negotiable for all markets in the state".

Market Leaders Call for Dialogue
In response to the sudden closure, some market executives have expressed shock, claiming they received no prior formal warning. While acknowledging the need for cleanliness, they are calling for a meeting with the state government to resolve the issues and minimize the economic impact on the thousands of traders who rely on the market.
The state has not yet announced the specific conditions for reopening, but it is expected that the market will remain closed until a thorough cleanup is conducted and waste management protocols are strictly established.
