Bolaji Idowu

Joseph Olubunmi Bolaji Idowu (September 28, 1913 – 1993) was a highly influential Nigerian theologian, educator, and Methodist church leader. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering ethnographic and theological studies of the Yoruba people, particularly his efforts to define and contextualize African Traditional Religion (ATR) within academic discourse.Early Life and Education Bolaji Idowu was born on September 28, 1913, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. He received his early education at Anglican and Wesleyan Methodist schools in Ikorodu, where he was converted to Christianity. After completing his studies at Wesley College in Ibadan, he was posted to Ogere in Remo, Ogun State, serving as an assistant pastor and headmaster of the local primary school. He returned to Wesley College in 1942 to train for ordination and continued his theological studies at Wesley House, Cambridge, from 1945 to 1948.Career Progression and Major Achievements Idowu began his significant academic career by joining the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Ibadan in 1958 as a professor. He quickly rose through the ranks, serving as the head of the department from 1963 until his retirement from academia in 1976. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in establishing the scholarly study of African religions. Between 1957 and 1958, he undertook a posting in Germany to address issues faced by African and Asian students. In addition to his academic contributions, Idowu was a major figure in the Methodist Church. After the church's new constitution was ratified in 1976, he became the church's Patriarch, a position of great distinction. He was highly revered by church members, with some believing that items he touched during services possessed healing powers. He retired from his role as Patriarch in 1984 and passed away in 1993.
