Oba Ewuare II
Overview
Oba Ewuare II, born Prince Eheneden Erediauwa on October 20, 1953, is the 40th Oba of Benin, a revered title designating the traditional Head of State of the Edo people in Edo State, Nigeria. His ascension to the throne in 2016 marked the continuation of a dynasty stretching back to the 12th century. Prince Eheneden Erediauwa received his early education in Benin City and later obtained his A-Level Certificate from South Thames College, London. He pursued higher education in the United Kingdom, graduating with a degree in Economics from the University of Wales. Furthering his academic qualifications, he earned a Master of Public Administration degree from Rutgers University Graduate School in New Jersey, USA. This diverse educational background in economics and public administration equipped him with a blend of traditional knowledge and modern governance principles. Prior to his enthronement, Oba Ewuare II had a distinguished career as a Nigerian diplomat. He worked briefly at the United Nations between 1981 and 1982. He subsequently served as Nigeria's Ambassador to several nations, including Angola and Sweden, where he also held accreditation to Norway, Denmark, and the Republic of Finland. He later served as Nigeria's Ambassador to Italy, concluding a notable career in international relations. This diplomatic service provided him with significant experience in global strategy and policy. Oba Ewuare II was crowned the Oba of Benin on October 20, 2016, succeeding his father, Oba Erediauwa. He chose the name Ewuare II as a tribute to the 15th-century Oba Ewuare I, known as a great warrior and administrator who significantly expanded the Benin Kingdom. Since his reign began, Oba Ewuare II has focused on the restoration and protection of the Edo culture, dignity, and security, working closely with government leaders, including former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, to ensure peace and development in the region. His major achievements often center on cultural preservation and promoting traditional values. As of the present, Oba Ewuare II remains the monarch of the Benin Kingdom. He is married to five Queens: Queen Iroghama (Obazuaye N'erie), Queen Iyayiota (Obazuwa N'erie), Queen Ikpakpa (Ohe N'erie), and two others married after his coronation, and he has several children. His role continues to be pivotal in maintaining the cultural heritage and traditional governance structure of the Edo people.
