Oba Rilwan Akiolu
Overview
Oba Rilwan Akiolu: The 21st Oba of Lagos Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu was born on October 29, 1943, in Lagos, British Nigeria. For his education, he studied law at the University of Lagos, where he earned his LL. degree. He is also a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management and a fellow of the Nigerian Law School. Shortly after his legal studies, Oba Akiolu joined the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), where he established a distinguished career. He served in various capacities throughout his tenure, eventually rising to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in 1999. He remained active in the police force until his retirement in 2002. His reign as the Oba of Lagos began on May 24, 2003, following the demise of his predecessor, Adeyinka Oyekan. He was officially crowned on August 9, 2003. As the Oba of Lagos, he serves as the primary custodian of Yoruba customs and traditions in Lagos. He presides over significant cultural events, notably the Eyo Festival, which is central to Lagos's cultural identity. Although his role is ceremonial, Oba Akiolu wields immense political and social influence within Lagos State and throughout Yoruba land, often serving as a bridge between traditional institutions and modern governance. Oba Rilwan Akiolu currently remains the reigning Oba of Lagos. He is widely respected for his discipline and strong personality, traits often attributed to his background in law enforcement. He continues to maintain a visible and active role in Lagos civic life, often speaking out on national politics and governance.
