Prior to this, she was the First Lady of Bayelsa State from 1999 to 2005 and 2007 to 2010. Early Life and Education Born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, Patience Jonathan is of Ijaw descent. She furthered her education at the University of Port Harcourt, where she graduated with a degree in Educational Management. In 1999, when her husband, Goodluck Jonathan, became the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, she became the First Lady of the state, a role she held until 2005, and again from 2007 to 2010, when her husband served as Governor. Following her husband's ascent to the Vice Presidency and then the Presidency of Nigeria, she assumed the role of the nation's First Lady from 2010 to 2015.
