The ruling was delivered on Tuesday by Justice Mohammed Umar. This decision brings an end to a long leadership tussle within the opposition party.
Anyanwu’s lawyer, U.C. Njemanze-Aku, told the court that they wanted to withdraw the case. He explained that the suit had been overtaken by events. Anyanwu’s tenure as the party's National Secretary expired in December 2025. Therefore, continuing the case would be a waste of the court’s time.
“In the interest of justice, I apply to withdraw this matter,” Njemanze-Aku stated.
Justice Umar agreed with the request. He dismissed the suit immediately. He also ruled that no costs would be awarded against any party. He noted that the delay was not caused by the people involved but by the situation itself.
Background of the Crisis
The case started when Anyanwu sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He also sued the PDP’s former acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.
Anyanwu wanted the court to stop INEC from accepting any letter from the PDP that he did not sign. He insisted he was the only valid National Secretary.
However, the party had other plans. The PDP leadership had moved to replace him. This led to a series of conflicting court orders from Enugu and Abuja.
The Supreme Court had earlier intervened. It ruled that the courts should not decide on internal party matters. Despite this, Anyanwu tried to keep his seat until his term ran out.
What This Means for the PDP
This dismissal clears the air for the PDP. The party can now move forward without the distraction of this lawsuit. They are expected to fully constitute their National Working Committee soon.
Political analysts say this is a chance for the PDP to rebuild. The party has faced many internal crises since the 2023 general elections.
In other legal news, Emir Sanusi has appealed to Governor Yusuf to sign death warrants for convicted criminals in Kano. This highlights the growing pressure on leaders to uphold the rule of law across the country.
Closing
