A powerful coalition of Northern groups and religious bodies has issued a stern ultimatum to the Federal Government following the mass abduction of worshippers in Kaduna State. The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), SOKAPU, and ECWA are united in their demand: rescue the victims now.
The outrage stems from a harrowing incident in the Kurmin Wali community of Kajuru Local Government Area, where bandits stormed ECWA and Cherubim & Seraphim churches during Sunday service, abducting nearly 170 people.
"Messy" Communication Sparks Anger
Tensions flared not just because of the attack, but due to the initial response from security agencies. The Kaduna State Police Command initially denied the incident, dismissing reports as "fake news" and the work of "conflict entrepreneurs". This denial was met with fierce backlash after community leaders released a detailed list of 177 missing persons, including entire households.
The ACF described the government's handling of the situation as "disappointing" and "poorly managed," noting that the denial only served to traumatize the victims' families further. CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh termed the initial dismissal "deeply troubling," warning that it unfairly questioned the integrity of the victims and eyewitnesses.
A Unified Call for Action
In a rare joint stance, the groups are demanding more than just words. They want a public apology for the initial denial and, most importantly, the immediate deployment of all tactical resources to secure the safe return of the hostages.
"We don't want Christian communities safe while others are not. If my neighbour is not safe, I am not safe," stated Joseph Hayab, Chairman of CAN in the 19 Northern States, emphasizing the need for a unified fight against terrorism.
The Federal Government continues to face mounting pressure to address the deteriorating security situation, with Governor Sanwo-Olu recently clarifying demolition plans in Lagos to maintain public order, while the North battles violent insurgency.
