Nigeria and Turkey Sign Major Deal to Hit $5 Billion Trade Target and Boost Security
Following a high-profile state visit to Ankara earlier this week, the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Republic of Turkey have officially entered a new era of strategic partnership. The two nations signed nine key agreements aimed at skyrocketing bilateral trade and strengthening defense capabilities.
President Bola Tinubu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan finalized the deals at the Presidential Complex in Ankara. The headline achievement is a bold commitment to increase trade volume from the current $2 billion to $5 billion in the near future.
A Boost for Business and Economy
For Nigeria, this deal is about opening doors. The new trade agreements cover critical sectors including energy, agriculture, and infrastructure.
The goal is to move beyond just buying and selling oil. The partnership encourages Turkish companies to invest directly in Nigeria’s economy, particularly in construction and manufacturing. In return, Nigerian businesses will gain better access to Turkish markets and technology.
President Tinubu emphasized that the agreements are designed to create jobs and foster an inclusive economy. "We are targeting growth that leaves no one behind," he stated during the joint press conference.

Strengthening National Security
Beyond trade, security was a top priority on the agenda. Nigeria is facing ongoing internal security challenges, and Turkey has become a key global player in defense technology.
The new Protocol on Military Cooperation will allow Nigeria to tap into Turkey's expertise in counter-terrorism and intelligence sharing. This is expected to include training for Nigerian security personnel and the acquisition of modern defense equipment, such as surveillance drones, to monitor border areas more effectively.
President Erdoğan pledged his country's full support, stating, "We stand by the friendly people of Nigeria in their fight against terrorism."
What Else Was Signed?
The partnership is broad-based. Other Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed during the visit include:
- Media and Communication: To fight misinformation and share broadcasting expertise.
- Education: fostering exchange programs and scholarships.
- Halal Accreditation: ensuring products meet international standards for export.
This visit marks a significant step in Nigeria's foreign policy, pivoting towards strong bilateral alliances that offer immediate, tangible benefits for the economy and national safety.
As these agreements move to the implementation stage, the focus will now shift to how quickly these promises translate into results for the average Nigerian.
