In a statement released on Tuesday, the US Mission described the late Imam as a "fearless champion of religious tolerance" whose legacy will continue to inspire generations. Abdullahi, who passed away on January 15 at the age of 90, is being remembered not just as a religious leader, but as a symbol of humanity’s capacity for good in the face of terror.
The Imam’s heroism gained global attention in June 2018. When armed bandits attacked the village of Nghar in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, fleeing Christians sought refuge in his mosque. Despite threats from the attackers, Imam Abdullahi hid 262 men, women, and children in his mosque and home, refusing to give them up. He famously confronted the gunmen, offering his own life in exchange for the safety of those he was protecting.
His bravery earned him the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award from the US Department of State, as well as national honors from the Nigerian government.
"His humanity positively manifested interfaith coexistence and harmony," the US Mission stated. "We know his legacy of peace and acceptance will live on and continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike."
