John Odafe Asiemo, widely known by his stage name Daddy Showkey, is a veteran Nigerian singer and songwriter. He is recognized as a pioneer of the "Ghetto Dance" or "Galala" genre, a unique sound blending reggae/ragga that originated from the Ajegunle area of Lagos, Nigeria.Early Life and Background Daddy Showkey was born John Odafe Asiemo (sometimes referred to as John Asiemo) and hails from the Olomoro Kingdom in Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State. He spent his formative years in the impoverished yet culturally rich neighborhood of Ajegunle, Lagos, where his experiences heavily influenced his music. Prior to his music career, he worked as a ticketer in a motor park, where he was encouraged to pursue singing after being told he had a good voice. His youth in Ajegunle was marked by violence and he has recounted involvement with a gang. He attended Dr. Lucas Memorial Grammar School in Kirikiri Town.Career Progression and Major Achievements Daddy Showkey rose to prominence in the late 1990s as a leading figure in the burgeoning Galala music scene. Along with contemporaries like Baba Fryo and Ras Kimono, he pioneered the genre, which served as a musical voice for the struggles and realities of life in the ghetto. His career was cemented with the release of his debut album, *Ghetto Soldier*, and the defining follow-up project, *The Name*. His music is known for its energetic rhythms, dancehall influences, and lyrics that often address social issues and celebrate the Ajegunle community. His influence earned him the chieftaincy title, *Aare Onifaji of Ajegunle*.Current Status In 2018, Daddy Showkey became a brand ambassador for the real estate management firm Revelation Property Group in Lagos State. He continues to advocate for the youth and community of Ajegunle.
