Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo (born June 9, 1980), widely known by his stage name D'banj, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, rapper, entrepreneur, and television personality. He is a prominent figure in the Afrobeats, pop, and R&B genres, and is often credited as one of the pioneers who brought Nigerian music to the global stage. Early Life and Education D'banj was born in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria, on June 9, 1980. His father was a military officer who commanded an artillery regiment, and his mother was a devout Christian church dignitary. Due to his father's profession, he moved frequently within Nigeria. D'banj initially pursued a military career, enrolling in the Nigerian Military School, but later sought a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos. However, he left university after only three years due to a faculty strike, a pivotal moment that led him to pursue music. Career Progression and Breakthrough D'banj's music career officially began in 2004 and is inextricably linked to producer Don Jazzy. While in London, D'banj met Don Jazzy and the two returned to Lagos, establishing Mo' Hits Records. D'banj released his debut album, "No Long Thing," in 2005, which included the hit single "Tongolo," marking his breakthrough in the Nigerian music scene. His subsequent albums, including *RunDown Funk U Up* (2006) and *The Entertainer* (2008), cemented his status. Major Achievements and Notable Works D'banj is known for his harmonica-infused sound and charismatic stage presence. His major global breakthrough came in 2012 with the hit song "Oliver Twist," which peaked at number nine on the UK Singles Chart and number two on the UK R\&B Chart, making him one of the first Nigerian artists to achieve mainstream success in the UK. This success led to his signing with Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music label in 2011, although he later left the label. D'banj has received numerous accolades, including the Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2008, and the BET Award for Best International Act: Africa in 2011.
