Michael Collins Ajereh, widely known as Don Jazzy, is a prominent Nigerian music executive, singer, songwriter, record producer, businessman, and philanthropist. He is a significant figure in the Nigerian music scene, particularly recognized as the founder and CEO of Mavin Records. Early Life and Education Don Jazzy was born on November 26, 1982, in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria. His father, Collins Enebeli Ajereh, is from Isoko in Delta State, while his mother is an Igbo princess from Abia State. Ajereh’s family relocated to Ajegunle, Lagos, where he was raised. His secondary education was completed at Federal Government College Lagos. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in music, learning to play instruments like the bass guitar and piano by age 12, as well as traditional drums. He pursued higher education in business management at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State. In 2000, Don Jazzy moved to London after an uncle invited him to play drums for a local church, and while there, he also worked as a security guard at McDonald's, all while continuing to pursue his musical interests. Career Progression and Major Achievements Don Jazzy's career took off after he connected with Nigerian artists in London, including Solek, JJC Skillz, and D’Banj. This association led to the creation of Mo' Hits Records in 2004 with D'Banj. Under his guidance, Mo' Hits became one of Nigeria's most influential record labels, producing chart-topping hits and launching the careers of artists like Wande Coal, D'Prince, and Dr SID. Following the dissolution of Mo' Hits Records in 2012, Don Jazzy established Mavin Records on May 8, 2012, headquartered in Victoria Island, Lagos. Mavin Records quickly became a powerhouse in African music, nurturing and promoting successful artists across the Afrobeats and Afropop genres. Notable Works and Impact As a producer, Don Jazzy is credited with shaping the sound of Nigerian pop music during the 2000s and 2010s. His notable works include producing numerous hit singles for artists on both Mo' Hits and Mavin Records. With Mavin Records, he has overseen the success of artists such as Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Rema, and Ayra Starr. He has also been featured as an artist on several tracks, including the 2014 collaboration "Dorobucci" with The Mavins.
