Itse Sagay

**Itsejuwa Esanjumi Sagay** (born c. 1940s) is a prominent Nigerian lawyer, academic, and public affairs activist, widely recognized as an authority in International Law and the Law of Torts. He is known for his extensive academic contributions and his outspoken stance on governance and public integrity in Nigeria.Early Life and Education Itse Sagay was born in Nigeria, hailing from Delta State. Although he initially intended to study medicine, he pursued law at the urging of his father. His academic excellence was evident early on; he earned a National Scholarship for the Best Performance in University (LL.B.). He subsequently obtained his LL.M. (Master of Laws) in 1965. Sagay continued his legal studies abroad, earning a Master of International Law (L.L.M.) from Cambridge University in 1968 and a Ph.D. in International Law in 1970.Career Progression and Achievements Sagay began his extensive academic career at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he rose through the ranks as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer. He served as the Acting Head of the Department of International Law. In 1979, he was elevated to the rank of Professor of Law. He later held administrative positions, including Acting Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1981 to 1982. Throughout his career, Professor Sagay distinguished himself as an advocate of moral uprightness and fairness. Beyond academia, Professor Sagay is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and currently serves as the Managing Partner of Itse Sagay & Co Legal Practitioner and Consultant in Lagos.Notable Works and Publications Professor Sagay is highly regarded for his scholarly output, having published 18 law books and monographs, in addition to over 200 publications in local and international journals and newspapers. His works are foundational texts in Nigerian jurisprudence. One of his most well-known publications is his book on the Law of Torts, which has become essential reading for law students across the country.Current Status Currently, Professor Itse Sagay continues his practice as a legal practitioner and consultant. He remains an active commentator on national public and legal affairs. He is also the author of the autobiography, *All Will Be Well: The Autobiography of Itsejuwa Sagay*. He is married with children.
