Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, widely known as King Sunny Adé, is a highly influential Nigerian musician, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, celebrated globally for pioneering the Jùjú music genre and its fusion with African pop. He is considered one of the first African pop musicians to achieve international acclaim and has been hailed as one of the most influential musicians of all time.Early Life and Education King Sunny Adé was born on September 22, 1946, in Osogbo, Nigeria. He hails from a Nigerian royal family originating from Ondo and Akure, making him an Omoba of the Yoruba people. His father was a church organist, and his mother, Maria Adegeye, was a trader whose relatives included Oba Adesida I. Adé left grammar school in Ondo City under the pretense of attending the University of Lagos, a move that allowed him to pursue his true passion for music in Lagos, where his eclectic musical career began in the 1960s.Career Progression and Achievements Adé's professional music career started with Moses Olaiya’s highlife band, the Federal Rhythm Dandies. In 1967, he formed his own backing band, which eventually became known as his African Beats. He quickly rose to prominence, developing his distinctive Jùjú music style that incorporated talking drums and a phalanx of electric guitars used for a percussive effect. King Sunny Adé achieved significant international recognition in the 1980s after signing with Island Records. Albums like *Juju Music* (1982), *Synchro System* (1983), and *Aura* (1984) exposed his sound to a global audience, leading to tours in Europe and North America. He was sometimes referred to as "the African Bob Marley." Beyond music, Adé has had an acting career, with his music featured in Hollywood films such as the 1983 film *Breathless* and the 1986 comedy *One More Saturday Night*. He also acted in Robert Altman's 1987 comedy *O.C. and Stiggs* and later appeared in several Nollywood movies in the early 2000s.Major Achievements and Notable Works King Sunny Adé's album *Odu* (1998) garnered a Grammy nomination, a significant recognition of his contribution to world music. He previously served as board chairman of the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria before being appointed honorary president of the society.
