Mai Mala Buni Mai Mala Buni CON (born 19 November 1967) is a Nigerian politician and businessman who has served as the Governor of Yobe State since 2019. A prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), he has also held significant roles within the party’s national leadership. Early Life and Education Mai Mala Buni was born on 19 November 1967, in Gujba, which was then part of the North-Eastern State and is now located in Yobe State, Nigeria. Buni is known for his involvement in private business before his foray into politics. While engaged in active politics, he pursued higher education, earning a B.Sc. in International Relations from Espan Formation University in the Benin Republic in 2014. He further obtained a Master’s degree in International Relations from Leeds Beckett University in the United Kingdom. Career Progression Before becoming governor, Mai Mala Buni built a career in private business, chairing the boards of several companies, including MBG Integrated Farms Ltd., MMB Petroleum and Chemical Company Nig., and MBG Construction and General Services Ltd. His political career gained national prominence through his dedication to the All Progressives Congress (APC). From 14 June 2014 to March 2019, he served as the National Secretary of the APC. Major Achievements and Political Roles Buni was first elected as the Governor of Yobe State in the 2019 Nigerian general elections under the platform of the APC, assuming office on 29 May 2019. During his tenure, his administration has focused on security, infrastructure development, and education in the state. Perhaps his most notable political assignment came when he was appointed as the Caretaker Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, serving in this capacity from 25 June 2020 to 22 March 2022. This role involved managing the party’s affairs and preparing for the national convention. Current Status Mai Mala Buni is currently the incumbent Governor of Yobe State, Nigeria, having assumed office on 29 May 2019, with Idi Barde Gubana serving as his deputy. He remains a key figure in the APC and Nigerian governance. He holds the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
