Mohammed Umar Bago: Nigerian Banker and Politician Mohammed Umar Bago (born 22 February 1974) is a Nigerian politician and banker who currently serves as the Governor of Niger State, a position he has held since 29 May 2023. Prior to his governorship, Bago was a long-serving member of the Nigerian House of Representatives, representing the Chanchaga Federal Constituency. Early Life and Education Mohammed Umar Bago was born in Minna, Niger State, to a Nupe family. His educational background includes a diploma in Mass Communications from the University of Lagos. Career Progression and Major Achievements Bago began his professional career in the banking sector. Following his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 1997, he worked as a cashier/cash officer at United Bank for Africa (UBA) from 1998 to 2000. He later served as a business development officer/profit center manager at Standard Trust Bank from 2000 to 2004, and then as a branch manager/regional manager at First City Monument Bank (FCMB) from 2004 to 2007. Transitioning to politics, Bago was elected to the House of Representatives, representing the Chanchaga Federal Constituency. During his tenure, he was a member of several influential committees, including Banking and Currency, Appropriation, Education, Internal Security, Information and Communication Technology, Defence, Loans & Debts, National Planning, Economic Development, Media, Civil Societies, and Donor Agencies. Notably, he served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Maritime Safety, Education, and Administration. Current Status Mohammed Umar Bago successfully contested and was elected Governor of Niger State, assuming office on May 29, 2023. He continues to focus on public service in his current capacity.
