Michael Ugochukwu Stephens (born September 20, 1975), widely known by his stage name Ruggedman, is a highly influential Nigerian rapper, entrepreneur, and activist. He is widely credited as one of the pioneers of Nigerian contemporary hip hop, particularly for his role in shifting the industry standard from foreign imports to embracing and promoting indigenous Nigerian musical talent and local content. Early Life and Education Ruggedman was born in Ohafia, Abia State, Nigeria. He spent his early years growing up in Lagos State. He attended Federal Government College, Odi, Bayelsa State, for his secondary education. Following this, he pursued higher education at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), where he earned a degree in Mass Communication. Career Progression Ruggedman's music career officially launched in 1999. He quickly gained prominence by advocating for Nigerian artists to sing or rap in their native languages and focusing on local narratives, a stance he publicly defended through his music. His debut album, *Ruggedman* (2004), was highly influential in the Nigerian music scene, establishing him as a potent voice in hip hop. His early success was often characterized by rap "battles" and lyrical commentary on the state of the music industry. He later founded his record label, Rugged Records, and ventured into fashion with his clothing line, "Twentieth September Wears" (TSW). Major Achievements and Notable Works One of Ruggedman's most significant contributions is his 2003 track "Ehen," a landmark song often cited for sparking a critical conversation about promoting Nigerian music over foreign material. Other notable releases include "Baraje," "Banging," and "Ruggedy Baba," which often feature collaborations with other prominent Nigerian artists.
