Overview

Salawa Abeni Alidu, widely known as Queen Salawa Abeni, is a prominent Nigerian musician recognized as the Queen of Waka Music. Waka is a traditional, Islamic-influenced Yoruba music genre historically performed by women, predating both jùjú and fuji music. Born on May 5, 1961, in Epe, Lagos State, Nigeria, Salawa Abeni began her musical journey at a young age. Her dedication to music quickly led her to prominence in the Nigerian cultural scene. Abeni’s professional career commenced at the remarkably early age of 15. She released her debut album, "Late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed," in 1976 on the Leader Records label. This album was a significant success and established her as a rising star in Nigerian music. She continued recording with Leader Records until 1986. During this period, she released several notable works, including "Iba Omode Iba Agba" (1976), "Shooting Stars" (1977), and "Ijamba Motor" (1978). In 1992, her stature in the traditional music scene was officially recognized when the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, crowned her the "Queen of Waka Music." She has released numerous albums throughout her active decades and has also diversified her career by acting in Nollywood movies. Her career progression involved a key shift in the mid-1980s when she ended her relationship with Leader Records and its owner, Lateef Adepoju. She subsequently married Kollington Ayinla and joined his record label, where she continued recording until 1994. Queen Salawa Abeni is celebrated not just as a musician but also as a cultural ambassador for her role in promoting Nigerian music and culture internationally. She remains an influential and decorated figure in the industry, with her unique Waka music style continuing to resonate with audiences.
