Skuki
Overview
Skuki is a Nigerian pop music duo composed of two brothers, Tumininu Laolu-Oguniyi (known by the moniker Vavavoom) and Atewologun Laolu-Ogunniyi (known as Peeshaun). They are recognized in the Nigerian music scene for their blend of Afrobeats and high-energy pop music. Early Life and Education The Laolu-Ogunniyi brothers were born in Nigeria to a father who worked as a television producer. Growing up, they were exposed to the entertainment industry and featured in various television programs as children. They even performed for Nigeria's former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida. Career Progression and Major Achievements The brothers chose the name "Skuki" and began performing under this moniker in 1999. However, they officially launched their music career in 2008 with their debut single, "Fire." Rapid success followed with their second single, "Banger," featuring DJ Zeez, which became a significant hit in Nigeria in 2009. Skuki's biggest achievement came when they won the coveted Next Rated category at The Headies music awards ceremony in 2010. This award is one of the most prestigious accolades for emerging artists in the Nigerian music industry. Their success continued with popular songs like "Voom," "Stamina," and the collaboration "Shisa." Notable Works and Current Status The duo is known for their lively stage presence and catchy tracks that often incorporate popular dance trends. Although their individual and collaborative musical output has varied in recent years, their influence is rooted in the late 2000s and early 2010s Afropop movement. Skuki maintains a presence on social media, with Peeshaun maintaining an active Instagram profile, indicating their continued connection to the entertainment sphere.
