Overview
Inetimi Alfred Odon (born August 15, 1980), popularly known as Timaya, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and the founder of DM (Dem Mama) Records Limited. He is known for blending Nigerian pop with elements of dancehall, hip-hop, Afrobeats, soca, and Afro-Caribbean/Dancehall music.Early Life and Education Timaya was born on August 15, 1980, in Port Harcourt City, Rivers State, Nigeria, and grew up as the youngest of 15 children. His father was a banker and his mother was a trader. He attended Assemblies of God Nursery and Primary School for his early education. His hometown is Sampou, in the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Nigeria.Career Progression Timaya's solo career began in 2005 with the release of the single "Dem Mama." This song, about the Odi massacre, became his first major hit after he collaborated with producer Obaksolo, whom he met in Mafoluku, Oshodi.Notable Works and Achievements Following his breakout single, Timaya released his debut album, *True Story*, in 2006, which included the track "Pomporo," a collaboration with Namse Udosen (Menthol X). His second album, *Gift and Grace*, was released in 2008. Major eras in his career include the releases of *True Story*, *Gift and Grace*, and *De Rebirth* (2005–2009); *Upgrade*, *Epiphany*, "Bum Bum Remix," and a Grammy nomination (2010–2017); and *Chulo Vibes* and *Gratitude* (2019–2020).Current Status Timaya continues his music career, with his most recent work including the 2023 release "Gladiator." He remains a prominent figure in the African music scene.
