Overview

Weird MC (born Adesola Adesimbo Idowu on July 9, 1970, in England) is a prominent Nigerian-British rapper, songwriter, and producer, widely recognized as one of Africa's first female rappers and a pioneer of Nigerian hip hop. Known by nicknames such as Da Rappatainer and Shola Idowu, her musical style is characterized by a hybrid blend of hip hop, Afrobeats, and R&B, utilizing a mix of English and Yoruba lyrics.Early Life and Education Idowu spent her childhood growing up between London and Lagos, Nigeria. Early in life, she aspired to become a professional basketball player. However, due to insufficient support for women in the sport by the Nigerian Sports Commission, she returned to the UK. She was originally part of a six-person group called "The Weirdos" during her secondary school years.Career Progression and Notable Works Weird MC began her professional music career in the United Kingdom. In 1992, she achieved third place in the UK's 291 contest (the equivalent of America's Apollo). Following this, she worked with producer Kevin Best and released the independent double-sided single "Wanna Make U Jack" / "Let's Get Wet." This single gained traction, reaching number one on the Choice FM Promo chart and the Blues and Soul UK Swing chart. The name "Weird MC" originated from her former group, "The Weirdos." She later returned to Nigeria to establish her career in Africa. Her debut Nigerian album, *Simply Weird*, and the single "Allen Avenue" solidified her presence in the live music circuit. In 1997, she made history by winning the first Hip Hop Music Award in Nigeria for Best Hip Hop/Pop Act of the Year.Major Achievements and Later Career A major career turning point came with the release of her second album, *After Da Storm*, in 2006. At this time, hip hop had gained significant recognition in Nigeria. The album, featuring production from notable figures like Don Jazzy and JJC, included the massive hit single "Ijoya." "Ijoya" earned her the AMEN award for Most Pop Song and a Channel O Music Video Award for Best Special Effect. The success of this track cemented her status as one of the most influential African female artists associated with the genre. Following *After the Storm*, Weird MC decided to take a deliberate break, partly due to the major loss of her friend Nomoreloss. She entered a period of "hibernation" from actively recording new albums, although she continued to perform, tour, and collaborate. As of recent reports, her album hibernation is over, suggesting a return to active recording projects.
