Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole is a prominent Nigerian politician, former labor leader, and statesman. He has held influential positions as the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Governor of Edo State, and a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.Early Life and Education Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole was born on April 4, 1952, in Iyamho, near Auchi in present-day Edo State, Nigeria. Born into a Muslim family, he was originally named Adams Aliyu. His early life was marked by a determination for education and community involvement. Oshiomhole began his professional career in the textile industry. He was trained as a trade unionist in Ruskin College at Oxford, United Kingdom. Later, he attended the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State, Nigeria, further equipping himself for national leadership roles.Career Progression and Major Achievements Oshiomhole's career began in the labor movement. He rose through the ranks of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, eventually serving as its General Secretary.Labor Union Leadership (1999–2007) Oshiomhole gained national prominence as the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) from 1999 to 2007. During this period, he became a formidable voice against the military regime and subsequent civilian administrations, particularly leading mass protests and strikes against increases in the price of petroleum products. His tenure is characterized by militant and effective advocacy for workers’ rights and socio-economic justice, earning him widespread recognition as a fearless labor leader.Governor of Edo State (2008–2016) In 2007, Oshiomhole transitioned into politics, contesting the governorship of Edo State under the Action Congress (AC) party. Although initial results declared his opponent the winner, Oshiomhole successfully challenged the results in court. On November 11, 2008, an appeal court ruled in his favor, declaring him the legitimate Governor of Edo State. During his two terms (2008–2016), his administration focused on infrastructural development, particularly in roads, schools, and healthcare facilities, a commitment popularly known as the "Edo Renewal Agenda." His major achievements include the reconstruction of urban roads in Benin City, the overhaul of the public school system with the "Red Roof" project, and civil service reforms.National Politics (2018–Present) After serving as governor, Oshiomhole became deeply involved in national party politics. In June 2018, he was elected as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria's ruling party. As party chairman, he was central to the APC's strategy and campaigns in the 2019 general elections.
