Donald Duke is a prominent Nigerian politician who served as the Governor of Cross River State from 1999 to 2007. His education includes studies at the Federal Government College, Enugu. He pursued higher education in the United States, attending the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. He furthered his studies at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, and later obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1984. His early career began in legal practice before his entry into politics. He is married to Onari Duke.Political Career and Governorship A member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Donald Duke began his political journey and was successfully elected Governor of Cross River State in 1999. He was re-elected in 2003, completing two full terms which ended in 2007. His governorship is widely regarded as transformative, largely due to his focus on diversifying the state's economy away from dependence on federal allocations. A major achievement during his administration was the conceptualization and development of the Tinapa Resort, a business and leisure resort intended to boost tourism and trade in the region. He is also credited with initiating the Calabar Carnival, an annual cultural festival that has become one of Nigeria's premier tourism events, earning Calabar the nickname "Nigeria's tourism capital."Notable Works and Achievements Duke's administration improved urban infrastructure, particularly in Calabar, making it one of the cleanest and most organized cities in Nigeria at the time.
