Saminu Turaki: Biography and Political Career Saminu Turaki (born July 15, 1963) is a Nigerian politician and former state executive. He gained significant prominence in Nigerian politics for serving as the Governor of Jigawa State from May 29, 1999, to May 29, 2007. Early Life and Education Ibrahim Saminu Turaki was born in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State (then part of Kano State). He pursued his education, culminating in a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He furthered his studies by obtaining a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of California, USA. His academic foundation equipped him for a career in public service and administration. Career Progression and Political Ascendancy Turaki’s career initially focused on business and technology. His foray into politics began with the return to democratic rule in 1999. Running on the platform of the All Peoples Party (APP), he successfully contested and won the governorship election in Jigawa State. He was sworn in on May 29, 1999. In 2003, he successfully sought re-election under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), securing a second term that ended in 2007. Major Achievements During his eight-year tenure as governor, Turaki focused heavily on leveraging Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to modernize the state's governance and education system.
