Overview

**James Ibori** James Onanefe Ibori (born August 4, 1958) is a Nigerian politician who served as the Governor of Delta State, Nigeria, from 1999 to 2007. His political career is significant, but it is also marked by subsequent convictions related to money laundering and fraud. Early Life and Education Ibori was born in Oghara, Delta State (then Bendel State). He completed his early education in Nigeria before traveling to the United Kingdom, where he attended the University of Benin. He later studied economics and political science at the University of London. Career Progression Ibori's early career involved working as a cashier for a drug store in the UK. After returning to Nigeria, he ventured into various businesses, including consulting and trading. His political career began in the early 1990s. In 1999, following Nigeria’s return to civilian rule, Ibori was elected as the Governor of Delta State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He served two consecutive four-year terms, leaving office in 2007. During his tenure, he was a powerful figure in Nigerian politics, particularly within the Niger Delta region. Major Achievements and Notable Works (as Governor) As governor, Ibori focused on infrastructure development in Delta State, including road construction, education, and healthcare projects. A major focus of his administration was the establishment of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), aimed at channeling oil derivation funds for development projects in oil-producing communities. He was also instrumental in advocating for resource control and a greater share of oil wealth for the Niger Delta states. Legal Challenges and Current Status Following his term as governor, Ibori faced intense scrutiny regarding allegations of corruption and money laundering. He was initially acquitted of 170 corruption charges in Nigeria in 2009. However, the UK authorities pursued charges against him related to the diversion of state funds. In 2012, Ibori pleaded guilty in a London court to 10 counts of fraud and money laundering totaling nearly £50 million and was sentenced to 13 years in prison. His conviction was a landmark case in the global fight against politically exposed persons (PEPs) involved in corruption. Ibori was released from UK prison in December 2016 after serving a portion of his sentence. Since his release, he has remained politically influential within Delta State and is seen as a key political elder in Nigeria.
