Ibikunle Amosun: Nigerian Politician and Former Governor Dapo Ibikunle Amosun (born January 25, 1958) is a Nigerian politician who served as the Governor of Ogun State from 2011 to 2019. Prior to his governorship, he represented the Ogun Central senatorial district as a senator from 2003 to 2007. A seasoned chartered accountant, Amosun has been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, particularly within the progressive political sphere. Early Life and Education Ibikunle Amosun was born in Ogun State, Nigeria. He attended primary and secondary schools in Abeokuta before proceeding to the Ogun State Polytechnic (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic), where he earned a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Accountancy in 1983. He later attended the University of Westminster in London, where he obtained a master’s degree in International Finance. He became an Associate Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in 1990 and a Fellow in 1996. Career Progression Amosun began his professional career working in the corporate sector, primarily in finance and auditing. He gained significant experience as an accountant before venturing into politics. His political career officially started when he was elected as a Senator representing the Ogun Central Senatorial District in 2003 under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). Following his term in the Senate, Amosun made his first run for governor of Ogun State in 2007 but was unsuccessful. He ran again in 2011, this time under the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and was successfully elected as the Governor of Ogun State. He was re-elected for a second term in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress (APC), completing his tenure in May 2019. During his governorship, Amosun was known for his "Mission to Rebuild" agenda, focusing heavily on infrastructure, security, and urban renewal projects, particularly in the state capital, Abeokuta. In 2019, after his two terms as governor, he was once again elected to the Nigerian Senate, representing Ogun Central for the second time. Major Achievements and Notable Works As Governor of Ogun State, Amosun initiated several large-scale infrastructural projects, including the construction of numerous bridges (popularly known as "Amosun's bridges") and the expansion of key road networks across the three senatorial districts of the state. He is credited with improving the state's security profile, notably by equipping the state police command and establishing a joint security task force. His administration also focused on increasing the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which saw significant growth during his tenure, positioning Ogun State as one of the financially robust states in Nigeria. His policy emphasis on industrialization attracted significant foreign and local investments to the state. Current Status Ibikunle Amosun remains an active figure in Nigerian politics and is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC). As of the last record, he holds the position of Senator representing the Ogun Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, having been re-elected to the Senate in 2019.
