Elisha Ishaku Abbo is a Nigerian politician who served as the Senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District in the Nigerian National Assembly. Known for a tumultuous political career, his tenure and public life have been marked by significant controversy and legal challenges. Early Life and Education Elisha Abbo was born on January 17, 1978, in Muchalla, Mubi North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria. He obtained a Diploma in Management Information Systems and a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. Before his political ascent, Abbo was engaged in various business ventures. Career Progression and Political Ascent Abbo's political career gained national attention in 2019 when he contested and won the senatorial seat for Adamawa North under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His victory was significant as he defeated the incumbent senator, Binta Masi Garba. As a Senator, he served in various committees, focusing on issues related to his constituency. His time in the Senate was characterized by his active participation in legislative debates. Major Controversy and Legal Challenges The most prominent period of Abbo’s public life revolved around a highly publicized incident in May 2019, shortly after his election. A viral video showed him physically assaulting a woman at a sex toy shop in Abuja. This incident sparked widespread public outrage and condemnation, leading to a police investigation and subsequent legal proceedings. The legal journey saw multiple developments: while an initial court acquitted him, an appellate court later overturned that judgment, upholding a fundamental rights case against him and ordering him to pay a fine to the victim. Current Status In October 2023, Elisha Abbo was removed from the Senate by the Court of Appeal in Abuja. The court nullified his election, ruling that his nomination was conducted through an illegal primary election. Abbo subsequently challenged this ruling at the Supreme Court, but the apex court upheld the judgment of the Court of Appeal, confirming his removal from office. Following his removal, he has been referred to as an Ex-Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
