Jide Kosoko
Overview
Babajide "Jide" Kosoko (born January 12, 1954) is a celebrated Nigerian actor, director, and producer. Born into the Kosoko royal family of Lagos Island, he holds the traditional title of prince, or "Omoba" in Yoruba. Kosoko grew up in Ebute Metta, Lagos, and was inspired to enter the acting profession by the success of veteran actor Hubert Ogunde. He began his career as a child actor in 1964, featuring in the television production titled *Makanjuola*. For his formal education, Kosoko studied business administration at the Yaba College of Technology, earning a Bachelor in Business Administration. His career progressed steadily, and in 1972, he established his own theatre troupe. Kosoko became a prominent figure in Nollywood during the video film era. He has since featured in, written, and produced numerous films and stage plays in both the English and Yoruba languages. His work has cemented his status as a veteran in the Nigerian film industry. Notable works in his filmography include the early productions *Asiri n la* (1992), which he also produced, *50/50* (1992), *Nkan La* (1992), *Asiri-nla (Top Secret)* (1993), and *Ibi ọmọ (Child's Placenta)* (1993). Other notable roles include starring in *Asewo to re Mecca* and Tunde Kelani's *Ti Oluwa Ni'Le part 2*. As a producer, his credits include films like *Ogun Ahoyaya*, *Olorire*, and *Arewaokunrin*. He was also chosen by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to produce a climate change documentary titled *Battle for life*. Among his major achievements, Kosoko has received nominations, including one in 2021 from the Abuja International Film Festival for Outstanding Male Actor in the film *Love Castle*. Beyond acting and directing, he is an active brand ambassador, having endorsed companies like the popular juice production company Chivita and MeritAbode Limited. His career remains active, spanning from 1964 to the present day. Kosoko has been married twice, to Karimat Kosoko and the late Henrietta Kosoko, and is the biological father of six children, including actresses Sola and Bidemi Kosoko.
