**Liyel Imoke: Nigerian Politician and Former Governor** Liyel Imoke (born July 10, 1961) is a prominent Nigerian politician who served as the Governor of Cross River State, Nigeria, from 2007 to 2015. Early Life and Education Born in Ishibori, Ogoja, Cross River State, Nigeria, Imoke completed his secondary education at Mary Knoll College in Ogoja. He pursued higher education in the United States, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1982. Subsequently, he obtained a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1985. Upon returning to Nigeria, he completed the mandatory program at the Nigerian Law School. Career Progression Imoke began his political career during the Third Nigerian Republic in 1992, at the age of 30, when he was elected as a Senator representing the Cross River Central Senatorial District. During his tenure, he served as the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Finance, and Appropriation. Following the transition to civilian rule in 1999, Imoke was appointed as the Special Adviser on Public Utilities by President Olusegun Obasanjo. He later served as the Minister of Power and Steel (2003–2006) and subsequently as the Minister of Education (May–July 2006). His work in the power sector was particularly notable, focusing on efforts to reform and liberalize Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure. Major Achievements and Notable Works as Governor In 2007, Liyel Imoke was elected Governor of Cross River State under the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). His governorship, which lasted two terms until 2015, was characterized by several major policy initiatives: Rural Development: His administration prioritized the "Operation Total Transformation" program, focusing on providing essential infrastructure, including roads, potable water, and electricity, to rural communities across the state. Tourism and Environment: Building on the state’s status as a major tourism hub, Imoke oversaw the continuous development of the annual Calabar Carnival, which became a globally recognized event. He also promoted environmental conservation, particularly within the state's rainforest areas. Healthcare and Education: Significant investments were made in primary healthcare facilities and the general overhaul of the public education system. Current Status Since leaving office in 2015, Liyel Imoke has remained an influential figure within the Nigerian political landscape, particularly within the People's Democratic Party (PDP).
