Overview
Ngozi Ezeonu, born Ngozi Ikpelue on May 23, 1965, in Owerri, Imo State, is a veteran Nigerian actress widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential figures, particularly known for her prominent roles portraying mother figures. She is a native of Ogbunike in Anambra State, Nigeria, and was born to Dennis and Ezenwanyi Ikpelue in a low-income household, growing up with six siblings. Prior to her acting career, Ezeonu pursued a Diploma Course in Journalism at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) in Lagos. After completing her studies, she worked as a journalist for reputable media houses, including Radio Lagos and Eko FM. Ezeonu began her career in the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, in the early 1990s. Her breakout role came in the 1994 film *Nneka the Pretty Serpent*. That same year, her versatility was highlighted by her performance as Thelma, a high-society mistress, in *Glamour Girls*. Her career is characterized by her ability to portray diverse characters, though she is most recognized for her frequent reprisal of regal or empathetic maternal roles. She has appeared in over 200 movies. Her major achievements include her performance in the 2012 movie *Adesuwa*, which earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 8th Africa Movie Academy Awards. In recognition of her dedication and contributions to the film industry, she was honored as the Sun Nollywood Icon of the Year for 2023. Beyond her film career, in 2012, she was honored with a Chieftaincy Title, "Ada Ife" (meaning 'daughter of light'), by His Royal Highness, C.F.N Ezerioha III, in her hometown of Ihiteoweri, Imo State. Ngozi Ezeonu remains an active and respected figure in Nigerian cinema. She was married to Edwin Ezeonu, and they have four children together: Ogechukwu Edwina, Chidera, and Melveen.
