Mikel Obi

John Obi Mikel (born John Michael Nchekwube Obinna on April 22, 1987) is a Nigerian professional footballer who primarily played as a defensive midfielder. He is widely recognized for his successful tenure at the English club Chelsea and for his pivotal role in the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles. Early Life and Education Mikel Obi was born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, to father Michael Obi, who ran a transport company, and mother Irosu Obi. His original name, Michael, was mistakenly registered as Mikel by the Nigerian Football Association (NFA) for the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Championship, a name he subsequently adopted. He began his football career at the age of 12, joining the Pepsi Football Academy, which is known for discovering Nigerian talent. Career Progression Mikel’s professional career started in 2004 when he signed with Plateau United in Nigeria. His exceptional talent quickly attracted international attention, particularly after his performance at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship where he helped Nigeria reach the final and won the Silver Ball award, second only to Lionel Messi. His transfer to Europe in 2006 was highly controversial, involving a widely publicized dispute between Manchester United and Chelsea. After a lengthy saga, Mikel officially joined Chelsea in June 2006, where he became an integral part of the midfield for over a decade. He made 372 appearances for the club, winning numerous major titles. Following his time at Chelsea, he played for clubs including Tianjin TEDA in China, Middlesbrough, and Trabzonspor, before concluding his career with Kuwait SC.
